Card Sorting is a user research technique used to understand how people categorize and organize information. By asking testers to group items (or "cards") in ways that make sense to them, we gain valuable insights into their mental models—how they expect information to be structured.
1. Closed Card Sorting:
Participants sort cards into predefined categories. This helps evaluate how well existing structures align with user thinking and uncovers potential improvements in category design.
2. Open Card Sorting:
Participants create their own categories and sort cards accordingly. This exploratory method reveals new ways users might group information, helping discover fresh perspectives or alternative classifications.
You can select a custom title for your Closed or Open Card Sorting session.
In the “Instructions” section, you can format text (Bold, Italic, Underline), insert media (YouTube, Vimeo, etc) and use bullet or numbered lists.
The block can be set as mandatory.
For Closed Card Sorting:
- Add cards and categories.
- Cards can be added in bulk.
For Open Card Sorting:
- Add cards only (categories created by testers).
Common settings for both:
- Tooltip descriptions on cards.
- Images on cards.
- Randomize card order.
- Require participants to rank cards.
Logic jumps can redirect participants based on their sorting actions or completion status.
Conditions Options:
- Tester visited current block
- Time spent on block (greater than, equal to, or less than a set number of seconds)
- Tester completed the card sorting
- Tester skipped the card sorting
- Category contains/does not contain specific cards (Closed Card Sorting only)
Results and Insights:
Open Card Sorting:
- Number of completions, drop-offs, and average completion time.
- Detailed breakdown of how each card was categorized.
- Inspection of which cards were placed into each category.
- Ability To standardize more 2 or more Categories into one
- Summary of standardized data in grid form.
- Matrix showing how often testers grouped any two cards together.
Closed Card Sorting:
- Number of completions, drop-offs, and average completion time.
- See how each card was categorized by your testers.
- Inspect what cards your testers sorted into each category.
- Analyze frequency and percentage of cards placed in each category.
User Session & Study-Level Insights:
- Review completion date and time taken for each tester.
- View tester info: country, OS, browser, and device.
- Access detailed session data on block completion, timing, number of cards and number of categories
- Optionally watch Video Shoots in the Theater (if enabled).
As of February 2025, the User Session interface presents a modal with:
- Left panel: participant stats, video playback, session metadata (device, country, tester GUID, Prolific ID if applicable).
- Right panel: participant responses, block data, stats, and screener answers (if present).
- Easy navigation between sessions.
